Employment provides more than an income. It can offer purpose, independence, connection and opportunities to contribute skills and talents in meaningful ways.
However, many people with cerebral palsy continue to face barriers when seeking employment, despite having the qualifications, experience and capability employers need.
To help address these challenges, Cerebral Palsy Australia recently partnered with Disability Employment Australia (DEA) to deliver a Lunch and Learn webinar focused on supporting employment success for people with cerebral palsy.
Presented by CPA Chair Zane McKenzie and CPA Board Director Wade Costley, the webinar explored how employers, recruiters and employment professionals can create more inclusive pathways to work.
Every person with cerebral palsy is different
One of the key messages from the webinar was that there is no single experience of cerebral palsy.
People with CP have diverse skills, experiences, aspirations and support needs. Some people may require workplace adjustments, while others may not. Understanding the individual is critical to achieving successful employment outcomes.
Challenging assumptions
The webinar highlighted the importance of focusing on a person’s strengths and capabilities rather than making assumptions based on appearance, mobility, communication style or support needs.
Too often, assumptions can become barriers to employment opportunities.
Instead, employers and employment professionals should start by asking individuals about their skills, goals and the supports that help them perform at their best.
Creating inclusive employment opportunities
The session also explored practical ways to improve access to employment, including:
● Removing barriers in recruitment processes
● Creating accessible interview and application processes
● Providing reasonable workplace adjustments where needed
● Building employer confidence and understanding
● Focusing on strengths, skills and potential
Inclusive workplaces benefit everyone by creating environments where people can contribute and thrive.
